Palestinian detainee ends hunger strike

Al Jazeera - A Palestinian detained by Israel, Khader Adnan, has agreed to end his 66-day hunger strike as part of a deal under which he will be released without charge, sources tell Al Jazeera.

JPost - Catherine Ashton, the EU’s foreign policy chief, on Saturday called on Israel to “preserve” the health of Palestinian prisoner Khader Adnan, 33, who has been on a hunger strike for 63 days.

Physicians for Human Rights - Israel has warned that it is not possible for Adnan to survive a hunger strike of more than 70 days.

The High Court of Justice has agreed to hear a petition on his behalf, but as of press time, it was not known when that hearing would take place.

Ashton’s office said she was “following with great concern reports about the deteriorating health condition of Khader Adnan.” Her office added that the policy chief and the EU had long been concerned about Israel’s policy of administrative detention, in which Palestinians were held without formal charges being brought against them.

Each year, the U.S. State Department, as required by law, issues a “Human Rights Report” which details abuses by other countries. To call it an exercise in hypocrisy is to understate the case: it is almost impossible to find any tyrannical power denounced by the State Department which the U.S. Government (and its closest allies) do not regularly exercise itself. Indeed, it’s often impossible to imagine how the authors of these reports can refrain from cackling mischievously over the glaring ironies of what they are denouncing (my all-time favorite example is discussed in the update here).

IMEMC - The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) is concerned for the life of Khader Adnan, a detainee in Israeli jails, who has been on hunger strike for more than two months. PCHR calls upon the international community to pressurize Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) to release Adnan, who has been placed under administrative detention without trial.
