US Aiming at Israeli Banks

Written by

Arutz Sheva - Swiss branches of two Israeli banks have been indicted by the U.S. Department of Justice for allegedly helping Americans conceal their offshore assets. The indictment, filed June 14 with the U.S. District Court in California, centers on United Revenue Services, Inc. (URS), a California and Nevada-based tax preparation firm.

Mondoweiss - Exciting news. The Coalition to Stop 30 Billion to Israel has put up 23 billboards across Los Angeles in an awareness initiative to stop military aid to Israel. The message:

Tell Congress: Spend Our Money at Home, Not on the Israeli Military

WallWritings - One election night victory in one New Jersey congressional district does not represent a major shift in American politics. But shifts do occur, and they must start somewhere.

On the night of June 5, 2012, this was the news the Star-Ledger reported from the Passaic County Community College in Paterson, NJ.

In an upset, U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell has defeated fellow incumbent U.S. Rep. Steve Rothman in the Democratic primary for the 9th Congressional District.

What makes the news from Passaic County so surprising was that Pascrell’s election to a House seat from New Jersey’s new 9th district was not supposed to happen.

How could it, two years after the news broke that Bill Pascrell was one of 54 House members who signed a 2010 letter to President Obama urging him “to use diplomatic pressure to resolve the blockade affecting Gaza.”

Washington Report on Middle East Affairs - The effects of the 2010 census are being felt in many congressional races this year, as states which gained or lost population had to reconfigure their congressional districts accordingly. This has resulted more than once in newly created districts where two incumbents battle for a single available seat.

Mondoweiss - Representative Joe Walsh’s (R-IL) Op-Ed in the Washington Times May 3 turned heads. He argued that the only real solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is “one contiguous Israeli state from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea.” Palestinians who wanted to stay would have “limited voting power.” Walsh also suggests Jordan as a destination for Palestinians. Robert Wright of The Atlantic commented that the Op-Ed should be interpreted as a call for apartheid and ethnic cleansing.

Methodists Boycott Settlement Products

Written by

Wall Writings - By a vote of 558 to 367, a strong majority of lay and clerical delegates to the United Methodist General Conference called this week for a boycott of Israeli companies operating in Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT).

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- Vice President Joe Biden said that "no president since Harry Truman has done more for Israel’s security than Barack Obama."

(JTA) -- New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, fresh off his first trip to Israel, has the attention of some key Jewish Republicans.

Fred Zeidman, a major Jewish donor to the campaign of presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney, says he hopes the trip leads Christie to seek national office.

"There's no question of this man's passion and devotion to Israel," Zeidman said. "I am certainly hopeful that he will take on a much more major role."

Lowey’s reputation as a premier pro-Israel lawmaker also may figure in the calculus of who gets the spot, although she is not making it an issue in her campaign. She has been a leader in securing assistance for Israel and has an unusually strong partnership with the foreign operations subcommittee chairwoman, Rep. Kay Granger (R-Texas), based in part on their commitment to the Israel-U.S. relationship.

.... Meanwhile in California, the Sherman-Berman race is already infused with pro-Israel politicking, and Sherman’s declared candidacy for the top Democratic spot on the foreign affairs committee only intensifies that element of the race. Berman, 71, and Sherman, 57, are both Jewish.

Sherman, in a statement to JTA, suggested that his tough postures on sanctioning Iran and supporting Israel were salient to his leadership bid.

“I have the breadth of experience to do the job and have worked tirelessly to help our caucus achieve a majority,” he said. “My record on Israel and on Iran sanctions is well known to all who read JTA reports.”...

Mondoweiss - The New Yorker and Jerry Haber are both pushing back against the smear campaign against MJ Rosenberg. Both sites implicitly defend Rosenberg's use of the term Israel firster. Gosh, but we live in amazing times. First, Connie Bruck's report on Rosenberg's antagonist, Bill Kristol's Emergency Committee for Israel, in the New Yorker:
